This project is part of a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) Urban Waters Restoration Grant awarded to the City of Battle Creek. The grant supports efforts to restore forests and stabilize streambanks along the Kalamazoo River by removing invasive vegetation and planting native species. As part of this work, 5,100 trees—primarily oak seedlings—were planted to enhance bird habitat and biodiversity.

Since January, staff and volunteers from the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary have been conducting weekly bird surveys and will continue monitoring bird activity throughout the year. In addition, Sanctuary staff are offering programs for the public and local schools to engage the community in citizen science efforts. These hands-on opportunities invite individuals of all ages to connect with nature, contribute to meaningful conservation work, and help track the impact of this vital restoration project.
