Improve your native plant identification knowledge and skills by attending our 2023 Field Botany series! All sessions are held on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m.

Get an up-close look at plant parts, learn about botanical terminology, and identify basic characteristics. In two classroom sessions, we will learn about Michigan’s diverse natural vegetation, emphasizing basic ecological principles of plant distribution, historic and contemporary influences on Michigan’s major vegetation types.

During the four field sessions, you will develop skills in using plant family characteristics and dichotomous keys to identify plants. We will learn common and scientific names and the ecological relationships of 40 to 50 plants in three main habitats including wetlands, forests, and prairie-like clearings.

Aug. 16: Wetland Plants of the Midwest (Field Trip)

Aug. 23: The History and Distribution of Michigan’s Native Plant Communities (Zoom Session)

Aug. 30: Prairies and Savannas of Michigan (Field Trip)

Sept. 6: Aquatic Plants (Field Trip)

$165/members. $185/non-members. Limited to 25 participants. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. on July 30, 2023.

Master Gardener Program Credits: This class has been approved for master gardener credits. Students receive one credit for every hour spent in class or field section.
