Why should wildflowers have all the fun? Join former KBSer and current botanist with MSU’s Michigan Natural Features Inventory, Tyler Bassett Ph.D, and botanist at Orbis Environmental Consulting Bradford Slaughter for sedge identification.

Sedges are found in a wide variety of habitats on all continents except Antarctica, but even experienced field biologists often struggle with identification.

Explore field sites within Kalamazoo and Barry Counties for an up-close look at species while learning from Bassett and Slaughter how to distinguish among similar families and the identification of “hard-to-identify” species found in southwest Michigan. You will also have the opportunity to examine specimens in a laboratory setting.

After this two-day course, you’ll leave understanding the fundamental morphological traits used to differentiate grasses, sedges, and rushes, while developing the skills to identify many common species of sedges in our region.

Course Fee: $200 (Bird Sanctuary members),$250 (non-members)
