Field Experiences for Students

The Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is getting excited to start seeing those bright, yellow buses pulling in with students of all ages eager to learn.  We are offering three new field experiences for groups this year.

  • Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Investigation (Grades 6-9)
    • Dive into the world of aquatic macroinvertebrates! In this hands-on field experience, students will collect, observe, and identify these essential members of the food web using dichotomous keys, hand lenses, and microscopes. Through scientific exploration, students will gain a deeper understanding of freshwater ecosystems and the important role these tiny creatures play.

  • Nature Journaling (Ages 5 – Adult)
    • Encourage curiosity and creativity with nature journaling! This adaptable experience enhances observation skills and deepens connections with the natural world through writing and drawing. Great for students who love science, art, and nature, this program fosters exploration rather than perfection. Activities can be tailored to fit your group’s needs, making it an enriching experience for all ages.

  • Fishing for Eagles (Grades K-12, June only)
    • Join us for an exciting adventure where students learn about fish and their importance to Bald Eagles! We’ll explore what fish need to survive, practice casting skills through a fun game, and then try our luck at catching real fish. This interactive program is limited to 20 students and is only available in June—don’t miss this unique opportunity to combine science, conservation, and outdoor fun!

The Sanctuary was very excited to host 73 groups last year with 2,000 of the participants being students.  You can explore the many options we have to support your groups learning needs by visiting our booking page.  Don’t forget, we have scholarship options available too!  Apply for a spring or fall scholarship using this form.

Join us for another great year of nature, hands-on learning, and fun!
