There is beauty and wonder all around us. Learning how to keep a nature journal of your observations can help deepen your connection to art, science, and the environment.

This four session program will begin with a presentation on ecology by Kellogg Biological Station scientists, followed by outdoor activities at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary. During the outdoor session, participants will have the opportunity to document nature observations using graphite and colored pencil techniques, guided by local artist Taylor Scamehorn.

Throughout the program, participants will explore the intersection of science and art, developing skills in thinking like an artist, naturalist, and scientist.

What to expect

Gain skills and experience in:

  • biodiversity at various scales
  • identifying patterns and interactions in nature
  • learning to observe the structure and form of individual organisms
  • developing art techniques using graphite and colored pencils.

Materials: paper, clipboards, graphite and colored pencils will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own.
